Eligible Village of New Paltz customers to be compensated for premature termination of an electricity supply contract by Columbia Utilities Power, LLC

The following notice applies to our residents and small businesses that participated in the CCA electricity supply contract with Columbia through July 18, 2022.

Our municipality participated in a community choice aggregation (CCA) electricity supply program through Hudson Valley Community Power (HVCP) with the program’s previous electricity supplier Columbia Utilities Power, LLC (Columbia), from July 2021 until the contract ended prematurely in July 2022.

All the municipalities participating in Hudson Valley Community Power (HVCP), and the program administrator Joule Assets, have come to a legal settlement with Columbia to compensate HVCP program participants for the premature termination of the electricity supply contract. The Public Service Commission also intervened in support of the legal case.

All HVCP participants enrolled through the program end date in July 2022 will receive compensation. Checks for approximately $50 will be mailed to eligible participants starting April 18, 2025. These checks will be void after 90 days, on July 17, 2025, as per the court’s order. The void date will be clearly indicated on each check.

Background:

  • Hudson Valley Community Power launched in July 2019, providing customers with renewable electricity, reducing the communities’ carbon footprint, and supporting clean energy resources in New York State.
  • Columbia Utilities Power, LLC served as the electricity supplier for HVCP from July 2021 until the program’s early termination on July 18, 2022.

Details regarding customer compensation:

Eligibility:

  • Every residential or small commercial account holder enrolled in the CCA electricity supply program as of July 18, 2022, will receive a check for each participating utility account.
  • Participants who opted out before the program ended or never participated will not receive a check.

Compensation Amount:

  • Every eligible account holder will receive a check for each participating utility account, for approximately $50.
  • Final amounts will depend on the number of recipients therefore checks could be a little more or a little less than $50.

Timeline:

  • April 18, 2025: Checks will be mailed to eligible participants.
  • July 17, 2025: Checks will be void after 90 days.
